MNO Archive

On this page you will find all the emails sent to encourage your fellow musicians

to go out for an evening and support each other starting with the latest.

At the bottom of the page is the first email I sent to the distribution list.

It outlines what this site is about, and where it is heading.

Please take the time to read through them. And remember, when you do go out tonight or tomorrow night,

let the band you saw know that you were there to support them. And let them know about MNO.

See you on the road.

AN MNO WEEKEND!!!!!

So what are you waiting for? Go out tonight. Go out tomorrow night. I know, go out BOTH NIGHTS! The calendar page has been updated. Lots of great music to be heard, fellow musicians to meet. Yea, I know…there’s that nasty white stuff on the ground. Uh, Chicago in the winter time, that never stopped us before!

Remember to meet with the bands and let them know you came out to support them. OR leave your business card with them and write MNO on the back. A tip of the hat to Bart of Suburban NiteLife for including the original email in his blog! Spread the word, just like Bart did. MNO, MNO, MNO!

If music be the food of life, R-R-R-RAWK ON!

I got a tip for you. You might know it already. Come a little closer…Ready…jam night. Want to meet a lot of musicians in one place…jam night. I will start listing the clubs holding jam nights for the winter season. Thanks to my pal Dave who reminded me about the importance of jam nights. I used to host at a club in Joliet. Not only did I get a turn out of some great blues players, like Twist and Al Sharp of Twist and the Groove Machine, but they would take me and rest of the band (Big Daddy Shark and the Fins) to school. I learned a lot.

So how could I forget this? Easy. Like the rest of you I am trying to keep my band afloat. So I will remind you of things we can do. Like the benefit for Earl Carter of the Riptones. I know it was short notice. Let’s take care of our own. We need it.

Just a quick note that I appreciate the email I have been getting from this list. I will note out of the 300 plus bands represented in this email distribution list, only five have asked to unsubscribe. This encourages me to encourage you.

Updates have been made for this weekends shows. Have a great weekend and a safe holiday. Go out and let your brother and sisters know you’re at their show. And spread the word…MNO.

MNO this weekend! UPDATES are here.

JUST DO IT! Just go and see another band, a band you’ve never heard of or seen before at a club you’ve never been to! Why? BECAUSE WE ALL NEED YOU TO!!! Then meet with the band and let them know you came out to support them! Look, I am not gaining anything here. I am not asking you for money, I am not asking you to book my band to open for your band, I just want you to go out. Those who know me personally understand where this is coming from and what I have accomplished before.

If you have any suggestions, comments or news about a club closing or even a musician in a serious situation who can use our help let me know.

Remember, I am only doing this to build support. We can all use it. Forward this to musicians you know. Ask them to spread the word… MNO, MNO, MNO!

Subject: MNO - Musicians Night Out - Chicago

Chicago Local Musicians:

It’s that time of year when nobody, but real musicians would dare go out into the cold winter night to see a band or play for…well other people that might be as crazy as us to go out in a blizzard. To continue with the providing or generating our own support system, I recommend a Musicians Night Out.

A Musicians Night Out is a lot like a boys/girls night out, only with your fellow players. So, here’s what I propose. Ready…

GO OUT AND SEE A BAND!!!! And drag one of your friends with you.

For those of you still trying to figure out what I am talking about go here

We can all make one evening a month to support another local band or club. There are no dues here and no one to check with to see if it’s OK. Just go! If you want to relay a club that can use support, let me know and I will share it with the list. Or add me to your newsletter and I will share your upcoming gigs with the list.

We are seeing some clubs close recently, and bands fall apart. Also a sign of a club on hard times is that they charge heavy at the door. There is no reason other than the economy. If we tell our fans/friends to go see bands, and they see us out and about then they will get the bug and hopefully infect others to do the same.

I have personally gone to two clubs in the last month to see bands I knew nothing about. Not only did I learn about them and the club they played, but I met one of the folks from this list I built to spread the word. (Nice meeting you, Brad. I had a great time!)

I will continue to keep your email addresses private for your privacy. It’s also a good way to control the spam. Want a couple of free tips on a safe broadcast email, just reply and I will fill you in. I’m a computer geek, it’s what I do for a living.

Subject: Local Bands United - Chicago

A clear sign of the times are empty clubs that once rocked. Bands now have to get used to repeatedly playing to the club staff because more and more people are staying home. Face it, it is easier to stay home! As a band alone we are being defeated; as musicians united together we can make the local scene what it used to be. And the effort is easy, inexpensive and within all of our command.

  1. Let your fan base know about other bands that you consider worth seeing by relaying the website and then mention them on your site as a band that you like to go see. The only caveat is that it cannot be the same bands. You should always mention someone different.

  1. Open your stage up to opening act. Allow 30- 45 minutes for an opening act. It’s how it was done sometime ago. Remember Luigi’s in Chicago Heights?

  1. This is crucial…On your weekends off go and see other bands. Do onto others! Go see bands you are not sure of, or maybe you just heard of. This will benefit you in two ways:

a)       If you consider that there are about 1000 bands from Valpo to RAWKford with an average of 4 people in each band, that’s 4000 more people going out to see bands that are NOT going out now!. This will give a new or an up-and-coming or a reformed band the exposure they could use and the club a shot of adrenaline it needs. Those bands will reciprocate and tell their fans about your band.

b)       By you going out, and telling your fans where you will be going, then they might go just because you will be there. You may get a couple of free drinks, you will be networking with new musicians, which never hurts, and your fans will get to listen to other good bands. You will not run the risk of losing your fan base because of the idea of reciprocation…others will come out to see you and bring their fans. You have the time, please make the time.

These ideas stand for cover bands as well as original bands. It stands for country bands as well as punk bands. And yes, it stands for suburban bands as well as city bands.

These ideas go for the more accomplished bands as well as the young bands. Accomplished bands, you can always use a new audience. Young bands, your future may depend on it!

Live free, ROCK HARD!

Tony Amaro

FYI…

The selection process went like this. I did a search on a few websites and looked at which one had a more diverse, yet complete list of bands. I performed my due diligence (too many years in the legal industry) and checked ALL of the websites. I looked at who site was working, which band is currently in circulation, and who had a standard (non-embedded) email address. I copied the address and the band name and built a database of addresses not governed by anything but alphabetic order. Your status in the local scene was not a factor, the quality or type of site was not a factor. What I did pass on was the MySpace sites. Only because an average fan would not have access to them without building an account. For the email you have received I built the message first. Then I added my database of address and hid them for your collective privacy. It is not a matter of advertising to each other, nor does it matter what band I am in. Though if you know how, you can find me. I will report, a few bands were disbanding because of low turn out. I also recently found out that clubs are going karaoke/DJ because the bands could not guarantee a decent turnout. And now we are full circle on this subject.
